15 Istanbul Biennials - 15 Artists / Limited Editions


Das türkische Wort für Edition ist edisyon. Schon in diesem Wort steckt soviel Musik und Leichtigkeit wie in der Editionsmappe, die fünfzehn internationale Künstler*innen der Biennale in Istanbul gestaltet haben. Die Künstler*innen – allesamt Teilnehmer*innen früherer Istanbuler Biennalen – haben ihre Arbeiten zur Verfügung gestellt, um der nächsten Biennale-Ausgabe finanzielle Unterstützung zukommen zu lassen und damit auch jungen Künstler*innen die Möglichkeit zu geben, Teil dieser besonderen Entdeckungsplattform zu werden.

Die Benefizausstellung in der Galerie Françoise Heitsch ist eine einmalige Gelegenheit für die Einsicht und den Erwerb der limitierten Editionsmappe. Diese beinhaltet fünfzehn Drucke folgender Künstler*innen: Füsun Onur, Ayşe Erkmen, Gülsün Karamustafa, Lawrence Weiner, Halil Altındere, Francis Alÿs, Elmgreen & Dragset, Taner Ceylan, Wael Shawky, Michael Rakowitz, Nevin Aladağ, Akram Zaatari, İnci Eviner, Adrián Villar Rojas, Mark Dion.

Man könnte unendlich viel über jede/n einzelne/n dieser Künstler*innen erzählen. Ich habe lediglich Füsun Onur ausgesucht, weil sie hierzulande wenig bekannt ist und weil sie bei der nächsten Biennale von Venedig die Türkei vertreten wird. Füsun Onurs Arbeiten zu erleben, ist ein Geschenk. Sie schafft es, fragile Alltagsobjekte poetisch aufzuladen, fortan hat der Gegenstand etwas Magisches, so dass wir ihn in Zukunft anders wahrnehmen werden. Die Objekte erhalten eine neue Symbolik, eine eigene Geschichte. Dieses Gefühl stellte sich auch bei der Rahmung der Edition in der Werkstatt von Werner Murrer ein, als ich das Blatt von Füsun Onur aus der Holzkiste holte. Die Zartheit des Blattes und die Intervention von Füsun Onur auf dem Blatt sind ein und dasselbe – beides einen Hauch, das Blatt und die Schrift, die sich darauf befindet.

Jeder weitere Druck ist genauso einmalig und explizit für diese Mappe entstanden. Und sie alle sind eine Hommage an die Istanbul- Biennale, die schon längst die Aufmerksamkeit der internationalen Kunstöffentlichkeit genießt, und zum Publikumsliebling avanciert ist.

The Turkish word for edition is edisyon. Already this word contains as much music and ease as the edition portfolio, which was created by fifteen international artists represented at the Istanbul Biennale. The artists – all of whom have participated in earlier Istanbul Biennales – have made their works available in order to financially support the upcoming Biennale edition
and therefore also give young artists the opportunity to become a part of this special discovery platform.

The charity exhibition at the Galerie Françoise Heitsch is a one-time opportunity to view and acquire the limited edition portfolio. It contains fifteen prints of the following artists: Füsun Onur, Ayşe Erkmen, Gülsün Karamustafa, Lawrence Weiner, Halil Altındere, Francis Alÿs, Elmgreen & Dragset, Taner Ceylan, Wael Shawky, Michael Rakowitz, Nevin Aladağ, Akram Zaatari, İnci Eviner, Adrián Villar Rojas, Mark Dion.

One could talk infinitely about each and everyone of these artists. I simply chose Füsun Onur, because she is not yet well-known in this part of the world and because she will represent Turkey at the next Venice Biennale. To experience Füsun Onur’s work is a gift. She succeeds in poetically charging fragile everyday objects, which consequently become somewhat magical and begin to change our perception. The objects obtain a new symbolism, their own history. This feeling was also present during the framing of the edition at the workshop of Werner Murrer when I took Füsun Onur’s sheet out of the wooden box. The fragility of the sheet and Füsun Onur’s intervention on it are one and the same – both are a breeze, the sheet as much as the writing on it.

The other prints are just as unique and were created explicitly for this portfolio. All of them are a tribute to the Istanbul Biennale, which has been enjoying the attention of the international art scene for quite some time now and so became the public’s favourite.
